Personally, I now have come around and am on a crusade in favor of the hard “g.” However, my crusade is to stop referring to JPEG files as JPEGs. After all, that refers to the originators of the file format, the Joint Photographic Experts Group and we don’t refer to a GIF file as a “Compuserve,” now, do we? If we stop using JPEG, we’d have the fun of referring to the file format with its actual name, which is JIF, and just confuse everyone.
“So, what file format did you want, a GIF or a JIF?”

I think it should be pronounced “heef,” like gila monster.

Or “if,” like gnarly.

“Yes.”

Thank you for the clarification. I never would have guessed it!
